The Jeep Compass SUV gets a seven-slat grille, angular wheel arches, and 18-inch alloys to command a bold road presence. Its potent 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine makes 172bhp/350Nm, and the Jeep 4x4 Selec-Terrain traction system provides better control to attack the unpaved paths.
4WD Diesel
3.7Positives: The same 168bhp 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine also gets a 4x4 version, but is only offered with a nine-speed automatic. The nine-speed automatic transmission does a great job of extracting the best output from the engine at highway speeds, thus, making it an accomplished long-distance tourer. Thanks to the Jeep 4x4 Selec-Terrain traction management system, there are different drive modes such as Auto, Mud, Sand, and Snow modes. The SUV also benefits from an independent rear suspension setup, Frequency Selective Damping (FSD), and Select Speed Control to manage throttle and braking while descending slopes. Its steering feels reassuringly hefty and quick enough to dispatch U-turns and parallel parks effortlessly. Negatives: There is some noticeable clatter inside the cabin from the diesel engine and some vibration on the steering and dashboard. Since the nine-speed gearbox is slow to respond at slower speeds, one needs to plan their overtaking manoeuvres. The ride quality is slightly hard at slow speeds and also when going over harsh potholes and imperfections at highway speeds. Despite the tall clearance, one must be careful not to scrape the front bumper on steep inclines or hurdles. The Compass tends to lean through the tight corners due to the high centre of gravity, but it is predictable. Compass Convenience and Technology
3.7Positives: Some of the USPs of the SUV include a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and electrically adjustable front seats with a memory function for the driver’s seat. The all-black cabin along with the multi-layer dashboard feels luxurious and sophisticated with leather inserts. The SUV also boasts leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, dual-zone automatic AC, tyre pressure monitoring, and a powered tailgate. There is a 10.2-inch customisable instrumentation and a 10.1-inch HD touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The digital instrumentation is customisable and bright with modern graphics sharing a lot of information. There is more than sufficient legroom in the second row with a wide seat base, which makes it comfortable for two occupants. The 438-litre bootspace is adequate to hold multiple bags and the 60:40 split-folding mechanism further improves practicality. Negatives: The abundant use of glossy black trim requires one to deal with fingerprint impressions and visible dust regularly. It will be a bit of a squeeze if the rear bench is expected to fit three healthy-sized adults comfortably. Read more
Compass Exterior and Interior Styling
3.6Positives: The Compass stands out prominently with its iconic Jeep grille design, distinct wheel arches, and dual-tone roof. The all-season 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels are stylish and crafted for both on- and off-road challenges. The Black Shark edition is a dark variant with 18-inch glossy black alloys, body-coloured window sill mouldings, glossy black badges, and a black interior with red accents. Its colour shades include Techno Metallic Green, Galaxy Blue, Silvery Moon, Brilliant Black, Pearl White, Grigio Magnesio Grey, and a bright Exotica Red. The car has an all-black interior with contrast stitching or a tan-black combo, both elevating the premium ambience. It has a strip that runs from end-to-end of the dashboard and chrome inserts on the steering, gear lever, and the bezel around the infotainment screen. The overall quality along with fit and finish levels are exceedingly good. Negatives: The Jeep Compass has been around for some time now and has begun to show its age. Read more
Compass Safety
3.7Positives: The Jeep Compass features six airbags, ABS, ESC, auto hold, Rain Brake Support (RBS), and Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) as part of its safety suite. It also features a 360-degree camera with dynamic grid lines, hill start assist, electronic parking brakes and ParkSense rear park assist system. The chassis has a strong unibody structure with approximately 70 per cent hot-stamped steel and is zinc-coated for enhanced corrosion protection. Moreover, the Euro NCAP authorities have awarded the Jeep Compass with a five-star crash test rating. Negatives: This Jeep Compass SUV does not have any ADAS features yet. Read more
2WD Diesel
3.7The 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine in the 4x2 iteration produces 168bhp and 350Nm of torque. It is offered with either a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Interior & Cargo Layout: The interior of the Tata Sierra is highly futuristic yet functional. The driver is greeted by a multi-screen cockpit that offers crisp graphics and fluid animations. The layout is clean, with minimal physical buttons. Passengers in the back enjoy excellent legroom, and the large panoramic roof adds to the airy feel of the cabin. Boot space is competitive and expandable via 60:40 split rear folding seats.
Value & Verdict: When comparing the features and driving dynamics against its mid-size competitors, the Sierra represents a solid proposition. Its blend of safety, design flair, and rich features makes it one of the most compelling options for buyers wanting a standout vehicle.
